Why Growing a Business Means Getting Comfortable With New Discomfort
Every stage of growth in a business comes with a financial commitment that feels genuinely frightening the first time you make it, and completely ordinary a year later. In a recent conversation on my podcast, that pattern came through clearly, from someone who built a business starting in a spare bedroom into dozens of locations across multiple countries.
Invest Before You Think You Need To
It's tempting to wait until a purchase or commitment feels obviously necessary before making it. But some of the most useful early investments happen slightly ahead of need, buying equipment for a business that could use it, committing to space before demand fully justifies it. That kind of forward investment can feel genuinely irrational in the moment, a whiteboard for a handful of students, a lease for a business still finding its feet, but it's often exactly what allows growth to happen when it does arrive, rather than scrambling to catch up afterward.
Pay for the Mistakes Someone Else Already Made
There's a strong temptation to figure everything out independently, treating outside help as an unnecessary expense. In practice, paying a consultant or advisor who has already navigated the specific challenge you're facing, a commercial lease, a franchising structure, an unfamiliar legal process, often saves far more time and money than the fee itself costs. Their value isn't information you couldn't eventually find yourself, it's the years of trial and error you get to skip by learning from mistakes they've already made.
Your Comfort Zone Moves With You, It Doesn't Disappear
Every new stage of growth introduces a new version of the same fear: a bigger financial commitment, a bigger unknown, a bigger risk that feels enormous in the moment. What actually happens over time isn't that the fear goes away, it's that the previous version of "big and scary" becomes completely normal, replaced by a new, larger discomfort at the next stage. Michael Black, founder of an education franchise that grew from a single spare room into more than seventy locations across several countries, described this exact pattern when we spoke: a $125 whiteboard purchase that once felt like a genuinely difficult decision now looks almost comically small compared to the commitments the business makes today. The scale changes. The underlying discomfort of stepping up doesn't.
A Franchise Model Works Because the System Does the Teaching
One of the most persistent myths about franchising is that it requires prior business experience to succeed. In reality, a well-built franchise system is designed precisely so that someone without that experience can follow proven steps and reach a reliable outcome, without needing to independently solve problems the franchisor has already solved. The absence of experience isn't a weakness in that model, it can actually be an advantage, since there's no ingrained assumption about how things "should" be done getting in the way of following what already works.
Where Growth Actually Starts
Scaling a business rarely happens through one dramatic leap. It happens through a long sequence of individually uncomfortable decisions, each one ordinary in hindsight, each one genuinely difficult the first time it's made. The founders who keep growing aren't the ones who stop feeling that discomfort, they're the ones who keep making the next uncomfortable decision anyway.
