What Every Business Owner Should Know About Hiring With Intention

Why Hiring Should Be One of Your Last Solutions, Not Your First

There's a common instinct to hire the moment a business hits friction, treating a new team member as the default fix for almost any problem. In a recent conversation on my podcast, that instinct got challenged directly, with a genuinely useful reframe about when hiring actually helps and when it just accelerates a problem that was already there.

An Accelerant Only Helps If You Already Have a Working Foundation

Hiring works well when it's applied to a business that's already functioning, adding capacity where genuine bandwidth has run out, or bringing in-house an expertise the business has already validated it needs. It works poorly as a rescue attempt for a business that isn't working in the first place. Jeshua Soh, who built a remote staffing business connecting Singapore companies with talent based in Myanmar, described this distinction plainly when we spoke: hiring someone to fix a marketing or AI strategy a founder doesn't understand themselves rarely works, because there's no internal capability to evaluate, direct, or build on what that hire produces. If it works, it's luck, not strategy.

Choose People Based on Fit, Not Geography

There's a persistent assumption that hiring remotely, especially internationally, introduces communication problems severe enough to outweigh the benefits. In practice, treating location as the primary filter misses the more important question entirely: who is actually the best fit for the role and the team, regardless of where they happen to live. Interviewing candidates across several countries costs nothing and reveals far more useful information than assuming a specific nationality or location guarantees a better outcome.

Test the Working Relationship Before You Commit to It

A polished resume and a strong interview reveal relatively little about how someone will actually perform inside a specific team and culture. Running a paid trial, or working through an actual small project together before making a longer-term commitment, protects both sides from a mismatch that only becomes obvious weeks into a full engagement. That small investment of time upfront tends to prevent a far more costly and disruptive mismatch discovered after someone has already left a previous role to join.

Build Giving Back Into the Business Model, Not On Top of It

It's common to treat social contribution as something separate from a business's core operations, a donation made once profits allow for it. A more integrated approach ties giving back directly into the value the business already creates, redirecting even a small percentage of genuine cost savings toward the community the business operates within. That kind of built-in structure tends to be far more sustainable than an occasional, disconnected act of charity, and it often strengthens the loyalty and engagement of the people the business works with.

Hire With Intention, Not Urgency

The instinct to hire quickly in response to a problem is understandable, but it rarely produces good outcomes without the underlying foundation to support it. Hiring deliberately, choosing fit over convenience, testing before committing, and building a model that gives back as it grows, tends to produce far more durable results than reaching for a new hire simply because something feels urgent.
