What Every Business Owner Should Know About Giving Presentations That Actually Work

Why Nobody Will Tell You Your Presentation Was Boring

Ask someone how their presentation went, and the honest answer is almost never the one you get. People say "it went pretty good" out of politeness, even when it clearly didn't, which means most presenters never receive the one piece of feedback that would actually help them improve. Without that honesty, the same mistakes get repeated talk after talk, meeting after meeting.

Know What Response You're Actually After

Before stepping on any stage, or in front of any audience, the more useful question isn't "what am I going to say," it's "what response am I hoping to get when I'm done." A presentation that ends in polite applause and nothing else has technically happened, but it hasn't actually worked. The goal isn't simply to inform, it's to move people to do something, ask a question, sign up, remember your name the next time they need what you offer. Judging a talk by how it felt in the room, rather than by whether it produced a genuine response, is one of the most common ways presenters fool themselves into thinking something succeeded when it didn't.

Facts Tell, Stories Sell

Listing credentials, equipment, or years of experience might inform an audience, but it rarely moves them to act. Facts alone are available anywhere, a documentary, a spec sheet, a website. What actually changes behaviour is a story that makes people feel something specific and relevant to their own situation. Steve Sapato, an MC and speaker coach with over three decades on stages across the country, described watching this play out directly when we spoke: a business that spent a talk purely describing its services got a polite "thanks," while a simple, well-framed question aimed at a genuine need in the room sent a fifth of the audience straight to the sign-up table.

Storyzing: Borrow Your Audience's Own Memories

Telling a personal story well isn't automatically engaging, plenty of dramatic stories fall flat because they're told without ever connecting to what the audience already carries inside them. A more effective approach deliberately taps into the audience's own memories and emotions, framing questions and details in a way that lets people relate their own experience back to what's being said. A simple, universally relatable question, like asking when, as a kid, you knew it was time to head home, does more to hold a room than an impressively detailed personal story that never gives listeners anything of their own to connect to.

Every Speaking Skill Is Learned, Including Confidence

There's a persistent myth that great speakers are simply born comfortable in front of a crowd, and that confidence is a fixed trait some people have and others don't. In practice, everything about how someone communicates, confidence, warmth, even the instinct for storytelling, was learned somewhere, the same way anger or love are learned rather than innate. If it was learned once, it can be unlearned and relearned differently, which means a genuinely engaging speaking style is available to virtually anyone willing to put in the deliberate practice.

Record Yourself Before You Ever Present Again

Most presenters never actually watch or listen to themselves speak, which means they're guessing at what's working rather than genuinely knowing. Recording even a short clip and reviewing it honestly, or having someone else review it honestly, is one of the simplest, most underused tools available for real improvement. You can't fix what you've never actually seen.
