What Every Business Owner Should Know About Building Their Third Act

Retirement used to mean stepping back entirely, and for a long time that was simply the accepted script. In a recent conversation on my podcast, a very different version of that stage of life came through, one built not around stepping back, but around deliberately designing what comes next.

It's tempting to assume you need a single, clearly defined path before making a big life change. In practice, pursuing several related interests at once, writing, speaking, playing an instrument, without knowing exactly how they'll connect, often works better than waiting for total clarity. Ken Stearns, who left a long corporate insurance career to travel the country recording interviews for a podcast built entirely around a jar of 444 questions, described this as intentionally keeping several projects moving in roughly the same direction, then letting the ones meant to connect find each other naturally, while the others quietly fall away. Certainty isn't the prerequisite for starting, movement in a general direction often is.

A demanding job can drain the exact resource needed to build something meaningful outside of it, whether that's creative energy, mental bandwidth, or simple willingness to start anything new at the end of a long day. Recognising when a role is consuming everything you'd otherwise use for yourself is an important signal, not something to simply push through indefinitely. Sometimes the clearest path toward a personal project isn't grinding harder, it's changing the conditions that are quietly emptying the tank before you ever get the chance to use it.

It's easy to build plans around what a role, a family, or a career "should" look like, rather than pausing to ask what's genuinely wanted underneath all of that. A single honest question, stripped of assumptions about what the answer is supposed to be, can surface a direction entirely different from the one someone has been quietly working toward for years. That question is uncomfortable precisely because the honest answer sometimes has nothing to do with the plan already in motion.

Waiting for a fully formed plan before taking action often means waiting indefinitely, since clarity tends to arrive after starting, not before. Small, imperfect steps, a hobby picked up with no clear purpose, a project started without knowing where it leads, tend to generate momentum that a polished plan sitting untouched never will. Once something is genuinely moving, correcting its direction becomes far easier than getting a stationary idea to move at all.

Whatever stage of life or career you're standing in, meaningful reinvention rarely starts with certainty. It starts with protecting the energy to try, pursuing more than one interest without demanding to know exactly where they lead, and asking honestly what you actually want, rather than what you've simply been expected to want all along.
