Persuasion Is A Science, Not A Personality Trait

Why Persuasion Is a Science, Not a Personality Trait

There's a common assumption that persuasion is a natural gift, something charismatic people are simply born with and everyone else has to do without. That assumption turns out to be wrong, and understanding why changes how a business owner can approach every sales conversation, proposal, and piece of marketing they create.

Most Decisions Are Made Before Logic Ever Gets Involved

Human decision-making runs on two distinct systems: a fast, intuitive one that operates automatically using mental shortcuts, and a slower, deliberate one that actually weighs information logically. The intuitive system handles the overwhelming majority of decisions, not just minor ones, but significant purchases too, with the logical system frequently stepping in afterward simply to justify a decision that's already been made. Patrick van der Burght, a certified trainer connected to the research behind the modern science of persuasion, described this dynamic clearly when we spoke: providing purely logical, rational arguments to a prospect doesn't necessarily help them decide, it can actually create hesitation, because the intuitive system that drives most decisions was never given anything to latch onto. Understanding which system a message is actually speaking to matters more than how logically sound that message is.

A Real Gift Has No Strings Attached

The instinct to build reciprocity, the idea that people feel obligated to give back when they've received something first, often gets applied incorrectly. Offering a lead magnet in exchange for an email address isn't a genuine gift, it's a transaction, and it doesn't activate the same psychological response that true reciprocity does. A gift only counts as a gift when it's given without a condition attached. Genuinely helping someone, with no immediate ask in return, tends to build far more goodwill over time than anything with a "give us your details first" catch built into it.

People Buy From Those They Feel Similar To

A meaningful body of research on business negotiations found that simply sharing personal, non-work details before diving into a deal, hobbies, interests, background, dramatically reduced the odds of a negotiation ending in deadlock. That's not a coincidence. People naturally favour others who seem similar to them, which means skipping small talk in favour of getting straight to business can quietly work against the outcome a founder is actually trying to achieve. Finding genuine points of common ground before a serious conversation isn't wasted time, it's part of what makes the actual conversation land.

Co-Creation Builds Loyalty That Outlasts a Single Sale

When someone contributes to shaping a solution rather than simply receiving a finished proposal, they develop a sense of shared ownership over the outcome, which makes them far more invested in it succeeding. Involving a client or team member in the process, asking what they actually want before presenting a recommendation, rather than deciding entirely on their behalf, builds a deeper kind of loyalty than a polished, fully-formed pitch ever manages to on its own.

Ethical Persuasion Is Still Persuasion

Understanding how people actually make decisions isn't about manipulation, it's about presenting genuinely good offers in a way that people can actually process and act on. The businesses that communicate purely in dense logic, however accurate, are quietly losing ground to those who understand that most decisions were never going to be made by logic in the first place.
