Let A Vision Pull You Forward Instead Of Pain Pushing You

What Every Business Owner Should Know About the Ceiling You Can't See

Plenty of founders hit a point where the business simply stops growing despite genuinely trying harder, longer hours, more effort, more pressure on themselves. In a recent conversation on my podcast, a different explanation for that ceiling came up, one that has nothing to do with effort at all.

Most of Your Results Come From Programming You Never Chose

A significant majority of a person's outcomes trace back to subconscious patterns absorbed over a lifetime, beliefs about money, worth, and effort formed long before any conscious decision was involved. Dr. Joseph Drolshagen, a psychologist and business coach who specialises in this exact gap, described missing a genuinely life-changing business opportunity in his twenties, not from lack of ability, but because an unexamined belief that he hadn't "earned" it quietly overruled the decision. That kind of programming doesn't announce itself, it simply shows up as procrastination, hesitation, or a sudden urge to do anything except the one thing that actually matters.

Let a Vision Pull You Forward Instead of Pain Pushing You

Many people only take decisive action once circumstances become painful enough to force their hand, a layoff, a financial crisis, a genuine breaking point. That approach works, but it's an unreliable engine for growth, since it requires suffering to generate momentum. A clearly defined, richly detailed vision of what a fully realised business and life actually looks and feels like can function as the opposite kind of motivator, pulling someone toward a future state rather than requiring pain to push them away from a present one.

If You're Not Consciously Choosing, You're Unconsciously Deciding Anyway

There's a temptation to treat inaction as a neutral, default state, simply not deciding yet. In practice, failing to consciously choose growth, health, or ambition doesn't leave things unchanged, it defaults to whatever unconscious programming is already running, which is rarely aligned with what someone would choose if they were actually paying attention. Recognising that neutrality is an illusion, that not choosing is itself a choice, tends to be an uncomfortable but genuinely useful realisation.

Keep a Beginner Mindset Even After You "Know" What's Possible

Life experience accumulates into a kind of certainty about what's realistic and what isn't, and that certainty quietly closes off possibilities before they're ever properly considered. Approaching new information and opportunities with a genuine beginner's openness, treating "that seems impossible" as a signal to examine the belief rather than confirmation that it's actually impossible, keeps a person receptive to growth that certainty would have otherwise ruled out before it began.

Alignment Comes Before the Plan

Building a business plan or growth strategy on top of unexamined internal resistance means constantly fighting against yourself while also trying to fight the market. Identifying and resolving that internal misalignment first, before building the plan, tends to produce a completely different, far less exhausting version of the same ambition.
