Why Being the Expert Can Quietly Cost You Clients
The better someone gets at their craft, the more fluent they become in the specific language of their industry, and the easier it becomes to forget that fluency isn't shared by the people they're actually trying to reach. That gap, between how an expert talks and how a customer actually searches, thinks, and describes their problem, quietly costs businesses clients every single day.
Speak Like Your Customer, Not Like a Colleague
Marketing copy written by an expert, for other experts, tends to read impressively and convert poorly, because the people who genuinely need the service rarely use the same vocabulary the industry uses internally. Michelle Poirier, a marketing consultant who works with small businesses on visibility and lead generation, described this pattern clearly when we spoke: a potential client isn't searching "how do I improve my SERP ranking," they're searching "how do I get my business on Google." Jargon-heavy messaging doesn't demonstrate expertise to the audience that actually matters, it simply filters them out before they ever get far enough to become a client.
Ask the "Dumb" Questions Before You Assume You Understand
Two people can use the exact same phrase, "build a website," and mean two completely different things by it. One person is picturing full workflow automation and SEO architecture, the other just wants somewhere people can find their phone number. Assuming shared understanding rather than actually clarifying it leads to mismatched expectations that surface much later, usually at the worst possible moment. Asking the plain, obvious-seeming question, rather than protecting an ego that doesn't want to seem like it needs clarification, tends to prevent far more expensive misunderstandings down the line.
Rules for Rules' Sake Quietly Erode Trust and Morale
Every business accumulates policies and procedures over time, and plenty of them outlive their original purpose without anyone noticing. A rule that made sense under one set of circumstances can quietly become an obstacle once those circumstances change, and treating every existing rule as permanently correct, simply because it's always been there, breeds exactly the kind of quiet resentment that eventually pushes good people out the door. Systems and procedures need regular review, not a "set it and forget it" mentality, or they slowly stop serving the purpose they were built for.
When Something Breaks, Fix the System, Not the Person
When a mistake happens, an underquoted client, a missed step, a costly oversight, the instinct is often to focus on who made the error. A more productive response asks a different question entirely: was there a gap in the system that allowed this mistake to happen in the first place? Involving the person who made the mistake in fixing the process, rather than simply reprimanding them for it, turns an uncomfortable moment into genuine ownership, and it usually produces a stronger, more resilient system than existed before the mistake ever happened.
Protect the Business You've Built, Including Online
None of the trust built through clear communication and fair systems matters much if the business itself isn't properly protected. Weak passwords, unreviewed plugins, and shared home networks are common, quiet vulnerabilities that most business owners never think about until something's already gone wrong. Taking security seriously, checking plugin risk before installing it, separating networks, isn't paranoia, it's simply protecting everything else that's been carefully built.
