Embracing the Leap (Even When It Feels Terrifying)
If you’ve ever stood on the edge of a big decision — starting a business, leaving a secure job, or stepping into the unknown — you’ll know the feeling.
That mix of excitement… and fear.
In this episode of The Boss Podcast, I sat down with Eric Woodard, a high-performance career and leadership coach, to talk about exactly that — what it really takes to make the leap.
And here’s the truth: it’s not about eliminating fear.
It’s about moving forward despite it.
From “Lost Soul” to the White House
Eric’s journey isn’t the typical polished success story.
He describes himself as a “lost soul” in his early years — transferring colleges seven times and even working as a scuba instructor in Guam.
Then came a bold (and slightly audacious) move: he wrote a letter to the President of the United States asking for a job.
That single action led him down a path that eventually landed him working with Hillary Clinton, the U.S. Senate, and the Smithsonian.
But what stands out isn’t the prestige.
It’s the willingness to act before feeling ready.
The Leap of Faith We All Avoid
Eric compared entrepreneurship to that famous “leap of faith” moment in Indiana Jones.
You don’t get certainty first.
You jump — and discover the ground is there.
“The only way to show yourself that it’s possible,” he said, “is to take the leap.”
And that’s where most people get stuck.
We wait for confidence.
We wait for guarantees.
We wait until it feels safe.
But safety is often just familiarity in disguise.
Your Brain Is Wired to Hold You Back
One of the most powerful parts of our conversation was this:
Your brain is not designed to help you succeed — it’s designed to keep you alive.
That means it will always default to worst-case scenarios.
“What if it fails?”
“What if I lose money?”
“What if I’m not good enough?”
It’s not a flaw. It’s biology.
But the shift comes when you stop believing every thought.
As Eric put it: “The issue is never the issue — it’s how we relate to it.”
Why Internal Validation Changes Everything
In business (and life), it’s easy to ride the emotional rollercoaster.
Good day? You feel unstoppable.
Bad day? Everything feels like it’s falling apart.
But that’s what happens when your validation comes from external results.
Instead, Eric shared the importance of building internal certainty — knowing you’re okay regardless of outcomes.
Because when you stop tying your worth to results, you become far more resilient.
And ironically, that’s when better results tend to follow.
So… Should You Take the Leap?
Here’s what I’ve learned — both from Eric and from my own journey:
It will feel uncomfortable.
It will feel uncertain.
And yes, it will probably feel scary.
But it’s almost never as scary as you imagine.
And more importantly — you’ll regret the chances you don’t take far more than the ones you do.
