Entrepreneurship is often sold as freedom.
Be your own boss. Set your own hours. Build life on your terms.
But what if that’s not entirely true?
In a recent episode of the You’re the Boss podcast, I sat down with Laurent Cohen, and his perspective challenges this idea in the most refreshing—and honest—way.
Because according to Laurent… you’re not actually the boss.
So, Who Is?
Your customers.
It sounds simple, but when you really sit with it, it changes everything.
Laurent shared that no matter how successful you become, you’re always answering to someone—clients, platforms, banks, market shifts. The moment you stop listening? That’s when things start to fall apart.
And honestly, I couldn’t agree more.
We often build businesses based on assumptions—who our customers are, what they want, how they behave. But the reality is, you don’t truly know until you’re in it, day in and day out, listening and adjusting.
That’s the real work.
The Illusion of Freedom
Entrepreneurship does give you flexibility—but it also comes with responsibility at every level.
Laurent described it perfectly: you don’t leave the “cage”… you just build your own.
And while that might sound heavy, it’s actually empowering. Because once you accept that responsibility, you start making better decisions—ones grounded in reality, not fantasy.
When Everything Goes Wrong (And It Will)
One of the most powerful moments in our conversation was Laurent’s story about the 2010 Icelandic volcano eruption.
At the time, his e-commerce business was thriving—right in the middle of peak holiday season. Then suddenly, flights were grounded across Europe. Orders couldn’t be delivered. Customers were left waiting.
And just like that, everything shifted.
What followed? Chargebacks, frozen payments, and a major business setback that took years to recover from.
It’s the kind of situation you can’t predict. But it’s also the kind that teaches you the most.
The Real Lesson: Adapt or Fall Behind
Laurent didn’t just recover—he rebuilt smarter.
He realized he’d put all his eggs in one basket, relying heavily on a single market and channel. So he diversified. Built a Plan B. Expanded his strategy.
And perhaps most importantly, he changed his mindset.
Less reactive. More resilient. More aware.
Because the truth is, business isn’t linear. It’s unpredictable, messy, and at times uncomfortable.
Your job isn’t to control it—it’s to navigate it.
What This Means for You
If you’re building a business (or thinking about it), here’s what I want you to take away:
You’re not the boss—your customers are. Listen to them.
Freedom in business comes with responsibility. Embrace both.
Expect challenges. You won’t always see them coming.
Build flexibility into your strategy—always have options.
And most importantly, protect your mindset. That’s your greatest asset.
Because success isn’t about avoiding setbacks—it’s about how you respond to them.
