Why the Best Business Idea Might Already Be in Front of You
Plenty of people stall out at the very first step of starting a business: not knowing what to actually build. In a recent conversation on my podcast, a genuinely simple framework came up for cutting through that uncertainty, one that doesn't require inventing something entirely new.
Ask What You Like, What You Need, and What You Already Do
Rather than searching for an entirely original idea, a more useful starting point is three honest questions: what do you enjoy doing, what do you currently need to do anyway, and what are you already doing without even thinking of it as a business. Bart Merrell, an entrepreneur and side hustle consultant, described writing out unfiltered answers to all three, then evaluating which ones could realistically be monetised quickly versus which ones would simply be enjoyable to pursue. The overlooked category is usually the second one, things you already need to do. If you're doing something anyway, there's often no reason it can't also generate income.
Turn a Need Into an Opportunity
Genuine hardship rarely feels like fertile ground for a business idea in the moment, but some of the most resilient business ideas come directly from navigating something difficult and then helping others do the same. A serious personal health challenge, a financial need, even an unwanted life circumstance, can become the foundation for a consulting practice or service built specifically around the exact experience just lived through. The question worth asking isn't whether a hardship is "business material," it's simply how the knowledge gained through it might genuinely help someone else facing the same thing.
Take Educated Risks, Not Reckless Ones
Entrepreneurship inevitably requires tolerating risk that a traditional career mostly protects against. The distinction that actually matters isn't between risk and no risk, it's between educated risk, calculated, informed, taken with some preparation behind it, and reckless risk taken purely for the thrill of it. Preparation combined with genuine willingness to act, rather than either alone, is what actually produces the outcomes people call "luck" from the outside.
Don't Build Yourself Another Job
It's entirely possible to start a business and simply recreate the same trap that prompted leaving employment in the first place, another set of demands with your name on it instead of someone else's. The distinction worth protecting from day one is building something that eventually creates genuine freedom, rather than simply building a more exhausting version of the job you left. Enjoying the work matters here too, tasks that feel like play rather than labor rarely feel like the burden a traditional job often does.
Monetize What's Already There
he search for a business idea often assumes the right one has to be found somewhere external, a gap in the market, a trend to chase. In practice, the most workable starting point is frequently already sitting in what you enjoy, what you need, and what you're already spending time doing, waiting only to be looked at as something worth monetizing.
