Getting Paid Around The World As An Entrepreneur

Why Accepting "Credit Cards" Isn't the Same Everywhere

It's easy to assume that if a payment setup works well in your home market, it will work just as well anywhere else a customer might find you. That assumption quietly costs businesses real revenue the moment they start selling across borders.

Localize Payment Methods to the Market You're Actually Selling In

Payment preferences vary dramatically by country, and treating them as universal is one of the most common mistakes in cross-border selling. Joseph Zahaitis, a payments industry consultant with three decades of experience, described a striking example when we spoke: in the Netherlands, a business that doesn't accept the local iDEAL payment method is effectively locking out roughly 90% of purchasing power in that market, regardless of how well credit cards work elsewhere. Many markets outside the US lean toward debit-based or local payment systems rather than credit, which means a payment setup built entirely around American norms can genuinely fail to convert customers in other regions.

Don't Try to Be Everywhere at Once

With well over a hundred alternative payment methods available globally, attempting to support all of them is neither realistic nor necessary. A far more effective approach starts with deliberately choosing which market to focus on first, then adapting pricing, currency, and payment methods specifically for that region, rather than spreading a generic setup thin across every possible market simultaneously. Trying to be equally accessible everywhere usually means being genuinely well-suited nowhere.

Have a Backup Payment Provider Before You Need One

Popular payment platforms work well at smaller transaction volumes, but scaling revenue can trigger account flags, frozen funds, or unexpected holds, sometimes with little warning. Relying on a single payment provider without any contingency plan leaves a business exposed to disruption at precisely the moment growth should be paying off. Establishing a secondary payment option in advance, before a primary provider ever causes a problem, protects revenue that would otherwise be genuinely at risk.

Credit Cards Come With a Hidden Risk: Chargebacks

Credit card payments carry a risk that's easy to overlook until it actually happens: a customer can dispute a charge and trigger a chargeback up to six months after the original transaction. For businesses selling higher-ticket products or services, that extended window creates real financial exposure long after a sale appeared to be complete. Understanding this risk, rather than assuming credit card payments are simply the safest and easiest default, matters especially for businesses with significant transaction values.

Money In Is as Important as Money Out

Most founders spend far more energy thinking about how to generate revenue than about how that revenue actually reaches their business safely and efficiently. Aligning payment methods with the specific market and customer base being served, avoiding overextension across too many options, and building in redundancy before it's needed all determine whether hard-won revenue actually converts into money in the bank.
