Why Getting Found Now Means More Than Ranking on Google
For years, being found online mostly meant ranking well in a list of blue links. That world has already started shifting, and the businesses paying attention to where it's heading are positioning themselves very differently from those still optimising purely for a search results page that's quietly losing relevance.
Manage Your Reputation Everywhere AI Might Cite You
When someone asks an AI tool a question about your business, the answer is pulled from whatever sources that tool considers reliable, and those sources are often obscure directories or listicles you've never heard of, let alone reviewed. Greg Heilers, founder of an SEO agency focused on off-site reputation, described discovering that an AI tool was citing outdated or simply incorrect claims about his own business, pulled from a directory profile he didn't even know existed. The fix wasn't complicated, correcting inaccurate listings, filling out abandoned profiles, and reaching out directly to correct factual errors, but it required actively monitoring what's being said about you across sources that never used to matter for visibility.
Write for Humans and for AI Agents
Content has traditionally been written with two audiences in mind: the human reader and the search engine crawler. A third audience is emerging quickly, AI agents that don't just retrieve information but potentially take action on someone's behalf, researching, comparing, and even completing purchases. Structuring content so it's genuinely useful to a human, easy for a traditional search engine to parse, and clear enough for an autonomous agent to act on, is becoming less optional and more foundational, even though it still sounds like a future concern to many business owners.
What's Old in SEO Is Becoming New Again
Search optimisation cycles through phases that look surprisingly familiar over time. Reputation management, once considered a somewhat outdated corner of digital marketing, has become newly relevant now that AI tools synthesise opinions and claims from across the web into a single confident-sounding answer. Techniques that seemed to fade in relevance a decade ago are proving useful again simply because the underlying problem, controlling what gets said about you online, never actually went away, it just changed which platforms mattered most.
Don't Assume AI-Generated Content Sounds the Way You Think It Does
There's a common assumption that content flagged as AI-written has a distinctive, identifiable tone. In practice, some of the phrasing patterns associated with AI writing may actually trace back to human content written by non-native English speakers, since a significant share of the internet's training data came from international freelance writers. That distinction matters because it means judging authenticity purely by how "AI-sounding" text feels can lead to unfairly dismissing genuine work, while missing more meaningful signals of accuracy and reliability.
Getting Found in a Moving Target
Visibility used to mean ranking on a single platform with a relatively stable set of rules. It now means being findable and accurately represented across an expanding set of AI tools, directories, and citation sources, most of which weren't part of anyone's marketing strategy even two years ago. The businesses that stay visible won't be the ones clinging to old assumptions about how search works, they'll be the ones actively tracking where the ground is shifting next.
