We talk a lot about productivity systems, morning routines, and time management. We talk far less about the thing underneath all of it: whether your body actually has the energy to execute any of it. In a recent conversation on my podcast, You're the Boss, I spoke with the founder of a red light therapy brand who discovered this field the hard way, through injury and illness, and ended up building a business around it. What struck me wasn't the product. It was how simple the underlying science actually is, and how disconnected most of us are from it.
Red light therapy sounds futuristic, but the concept is ancient. Sunlight has always carried specific wavelengths that interact with our cells. What's changed is our ability to isolate those wavelengths and deliver them in a concentrated, portable way. At a cellular level, this is about energising the mitochondria, the part of the cell responsible for producing usable energy. Think of it less as a wellness trend and more as giving your cells better raw material to work with.
Most people's first encounter with this technology is a beauty device, an LED face mask promising fewer wrinkles and more collagen. That's a real application, but it's the entry point, not the ceiling. The same underlying mechanism has moved into pain management, helping with arthritis and chronic back pain, and research is now extending into brain health, with early work looking at conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The pattern is consistent: energised cells recover faster and function better, whether that cell is in your skin, your joint, or your brain.
It's tempting to file this under "fitness recovery" and move on. But chronic low energy, brain fog, and slow recovery from stress aren't athlete problems, they're business owner problems. As John Graham Harper put it when we spoke, his own turning point came not from the gym, but from a health scare that forced him to rethink recovery altogether. If you're running on adrenaline and coffee, you're managing the symptom, not the cause. Tools that work at the cellular level address the actual deficit, rather than masking it for a few hours.
Wellness Belongs at Your Desk, Not Just Your Gym
Perhaps the most useful shift in this conversation was practical: these tools don't require a studio or an hour you don't have. A short session, applied directly to the neck, chest, or gut, during a workday, can support focus and energy without another cup of coffee. Pair that with proper hydration, which measurably improves how effective the light is absorbed, and you have a wellness habit that fits inside a working day rather than competing with it.
You cannot out-strategise a depleted body. Before you add another productivity hack to your business, it's worth asking whether the real bottleneck is energy at the cellular level. Recovery isn't a luxury for athletes or a reward for after hours, it's operating infrastructure for anyone building something that demands as much from them as a business does.
