There's a category of decision most of us push to "someday": the will we haven't written, the succession plan we haven't documented, the hard conversation we keep rescheduling. It's rarely about money or time. It's almost always about not wanting to face what the decision represents. In a recent conversation on my podcast, this idea surfaced in an unexpectedly personal way, and it's one every business owner should sit with.
It's tempting to assume people avoid big decisions because they lack resources. In practice, even people with significant wealth delay the exact same decisions everyone else does, wills, financial plans, succession, difficult conversations with family or partners. The block is rarely financial. It's psychological. Nobody wants to sit inside the discomfort of what the decision is actually about.
If you've been telling yourself you'll deal with something once you have more time or more money, it's worth asking honestly whether that's really the barrier, or whether it's simply easier to keep postponing.
The most useful reframe here is simple: clarity isn't a bureaucratic exercise, it's an act of care for the people who depend on you. Whether that's a succession plan for your business, clear documentation so your team isn't guessing, or simply making sure the people around you understand what you actually want, clarity removes the burden of uncertainty from someone else's shoulders later. Avoiding the hard conversation doesn't protect anyone, it just delays the confusion to a worse moment.
Most of the time, success isn't a clear pattern you can see while you're living it. It's putting your head down and doing your best every day, and only making sense of it looking back. Jermaine Ee, who built businesses across social media, politics, and legal tech before finding his current mission, put it plainly when we spoke. If your own path feels chaotic right now, that's not a sign you're off track. It may simply be a sign you haven't reached the point where the dots connect yet.
There's a stubborn kind of resilience that doesn't get talked about enough: the decision to simply not stop, regardless of how unglamorous the interim looks. Driving for a rideshare app to fund a business idea, taking work that doesn't match your ambitions while you build toward something else, none of that is failure. It's the unremarkable, necessary middle of almost every real success story.
Wealth and achievement are useful tools, but they were never going to resolve the parts of life that have nothing to do with resources, time with the people you love, health, peace of mind. The businesses worth building are the ones that leave room for those things, not the ones that quietly consume them in the name of growth.
The decisions you're avoiding rarely stay avoided forever, they just get more expensive to face later. Whether it's a plan you haven't written or a version of success you haven't yet made sense of, clarity now is almost always kinder than certainty later.
