It's a common assumption that once a product is listed somewhere, Amazon, Etsy, any marketplace with built-in traffic, the platform itself will generate the sales. In practice, listing something is only the starting point. In a recent conversation on my podcast, this idea came through with striking clarity, from someone who's sold tens of thousands of items across two decades without ever building a traditional website.
You Are the One Who Sells It, Not the Marketplace
A paperback listed on a major platform might only net a few dollars in royalties per copy, while the same book, sold directly, can bring in several times that. The platform provides visibility, but it rarely does the actual convincing. Waiting passively for algorithm traffic to turn into sales, rather than actively bringing the product to people who already want it, tends to produce disappointing results regardless of how good the product is. The founders who do well treat the marketplace as one channel among several, not the whole strategy.
Find the Room Where Your People Already Are
Rather than marketing broadly and hoping the right customers filter through, it's far more effective to identify the specific communities where your ideal customer already gathers, then show up there directly. A niche audience, small in absolute size but highly relevant, tends to convert far better than a broad audience with only passing interest. Kira Hartley Klinger, who built a business around vintage textiles and later expanded into books and speaking, described this exact principle when we spoke: bringing her books to quilting guilds directly, rather than relying on online sales alone, consistently outperformed anything the marketplace algorithm produced on its own.
Starting something new tends to attract well-meaning caution from people who genuinely care about you, warnings about risk, about timing, about practicality. That caution is rarely malicious, but it can be corrosive if it's the only voice you're hearing. Deliberately keeping people close who reinforce the goal rather than the hesitation isn't about avoiding honest feedback, it's about not letting fear disguised as concern make your decisions for you.
Not every part of running a business needs to be done personally, especially the parts that are genuinely difficult for you but simple for someone else. Finding a reliable person to handle an awkward, time-consuming task, even for a small fee, often preserves far more value than the cost of paying them. The instinct to do everything yourself to save money frequently costs more time than it saves.
The Marketing Truth
Visibility only converts into revenue when you actively bring your product to the people already looking for it, rather than waiting for a platform to do that work on your behalf. The businesses that grow steadily are the ones that treat every channel, marketplaces, direct sales, in-person events, as tools to be used deliberately, not a system to be trusted blindly.
