The Leap Into Entrepreneurship Is Never as Scary as You Think

Why the Leap Is Never as Scary as You Think

Almost every founder I talk to on my podcast describes the moment before they started: a version of themselves standing at the edge of something, absolutely certain it was going to go badly. Most of them jumped anyway. In a recent conversation, that idea came up again and again, and it's worth unpacking properly, because the fear itself is rarely the real obstacle.

Fear Is Not a Signal to Stop, It's Data

Our brains are wired for survival, not for happiness or growth. The part of you that panics before a big decision isn't malfunctioning. It's doing exactly what it evolved to do: keep you safe by keeping you the same. The mistake is treating that alarm as instruction. Fear tells you something matters. It was never designed to tell you whether to proceed.

The Leap Rarely Looks Like You Expect

Sometimes the only way to prove something isn't as scary as you think is to jump, because there's no other way to find out. That's not recklessness. It's recognising that certainty was never coming, no matter how long you waited for it.

Two people can face the exact same setback and walk away with completely different stories, one sees a disaster, the other sees information. The situation itself rarely determines the outcome. How you relate to it does.

Price Between Resentment and Regret

There are two lines every business owner should know. Price too low and you cross the resentment line, quietly building bitterness toward work you used to love. Price too high without confidence to back it and you hit the puke line, the point where even you don't believe what you're charging. The right price sits somewhere between the two, and finding it usually requires more self-worth work than market research. Eric Woodard, a leadership coach who spent years working inside the White House and the U.S. Senate before starting his own business, described exactly this tension when we spoke: pricing yourself in that narrow band between resentment and disbelief is less about market research and more about self-worth work.

Validation Has to Come From Somewhere Internal

If your sense of worth rises and falls with every win and loss, the lows will flatten you. Founders who last learn to separate their value as a person from the performance of their business on any given week. That's not detachment, it's the only foundation stable enough to build on.

Measure the Distance You've Travelled, Not What's Left

It's easy to stay fixated on the gap between where you are and where you want to be. That gap never closes, there's always a bigger version of the goal. The healthier measure is the gain, how far you've already come from where you started. Look back before you look forward.

The Real Lesson

Nobody regrets the leap they took nearly as much as the one they didn't. Fear will show up before every meaningful decision you make, that's guaranteed. What isn't guaranteed is that waiting for it to disappear will ever pay off. It won't. Jump anyway.
