Why Imposter Syndrome Isn't Really About Skill
It's easy to assume imposter syndrome means someone genuinely lacks the ability they're anxious about. In practice, the people most affected by it are often highly skilled, highly educated, and quietly convinced that none of it counts because nobody's actually seen the evidence. The gap isn't in their competence. It's in what they've let anyone else witness.
The Four Quadrants of Confidence and Ability
A genuinely useful way to understand imposter syndrome treats confidence and ability as two separate axes rather than one combined feeling. Someone can start out low in both, still learning and appropriately unsure of themselves, and grow steadily in ability while confidence lags far behind. That gap, high ability paired with low confidence, is the classic imposter zone, and it's an uncomfortable place to sit precisely because the skill is real but invisible to everyone else, including, eventually, to the person themselves.
Share Your Wins Before You Feel Ready To
The way out of that gap isn't more studying or more credentials, it's simply starting to talk about what's already been accomplished. Dr. Christiane Schroeter, a TEDx speaker and business professor who coaches high-achieving leaders through exactly this pattern, described the shift plainly when we spoke: sharing weekly wins, out loud, in a way that feels natural rather than boastful, is what actually closes the gap between real ability and felt confidence. Nobody else can validate work they never hear about, and confidence tends to catch up once the evidence starts being spoken rather than only privately known.
Prepare Your Sentences in Advance
Speaking up in the moment, in a meeting, a pitch, a room full of people who seem more certain, is genuinely harder than it sounds, even for people who know exactly what they want to say. Preparing specific sentences in advance, so that all that's required in the moment is delivering something already rehearsed, removes a significant amount of the pressure that keeps people quiet. It's a small, practical habit that turns "speaking up" from a spontaneous act of bravery into something closer to muscle memory.
Break the Big Goal Into Sticky Notes
A large, ambitious goal, launching a podcast, writing a book, building a business, tends to feel paralysing when considered all at once. Breaking it into small, individually completable steps, one sticky note at a time, turns an overwhelming project into a series of manageable daily decisions. The goal doesn't get smaller, but the path toward it becomes something that can actually be acted on today, rather than something permanently deferred to "when there's more time."
You Can't Fail at Something You Actually Tried
There's a meaningful difference between never starting something and starting it, discovering it wasn't the right fit, and setting it aside. The second isn't failure, it's information that could only have been gained by actually trying. Treating a genuine first attempt, however rough, as evidence of failure rather than evidence of learning keeps people stuck in exactly the same imposter zone that silence created in the first place.
