Why the Best Story in Your Business Might Already Be Dying in a Meeting Room
Somewhere inside most businesses sits a genuinely remarkable story that nobody has ever told publicly, not because it isn't worth telling, but because the person who lived it doesn't think it's special. They were just doing their job.
You Can't Read the Label From Inside the Jar
There's a simple reason business owners struggle to see their own value: they're too close to it. A skill that took years to build starts to feel ordinary the moment it becomes second nature, even if it's genuinely rare and valuable to everyone outside looking in. Someone who meticulously planned an early retirement over twenty years might insist "anyone could do that," entirely missing that if it were actually that easy, far more people would have done it themselves. Taking your own expertise for granted isn't humility, it's simply a blind spot everyone develops toward the thing they're closest to.
Your Origin Story Is the Fastest Way to Spot Invisible Value
Jen Bullington, a storytelling strategist and former corporate trainer who now helps business owners uncover and communicate the value hiding in their businesses, described a simple diagnostic when we spoke: if your "why," the actual story of how and why you started, isn't visible anywhere on your website or your about page, you almost certainly have invisible value sitting unused. Credentials and service lists tell a visitor what you do. The origin story is usually what actually explains why anyone should trust you to do it well, and it's the piece most businesses skip entirely.
Build a Story Vault Before You Need One
Meaningful moments happen constantly inside a growing business, a client's problem solved dramatically, a turning point, a piece of institutional history, but they rarely get written down in the moment. Different people across a business often hold different pieces of the same story without realising anyone else has the rest of it. Deliberately capturing these moments as they happen, rather than trying to reconstruct them later from memory or scattered records, protects material that would otherwise simply disappear. One company only recovered the location of land it owned because a single driver, decades later, still remembered which properties belonged to it after all official records were destroyed. That's not an unusual story, it's simply what happens to unrecorded history over enough time.
Demonstrate What You Wish People Already Knew
A useful test for spotting invisible value is noticing the specific thing you wish clients already understood about you, a particular method, a philosophy, a level of care that isn't obvious from the outside. Once identified, that wish becomes the starting point for a genuine story: when was the last time you actually demonstrated that thing publicly, rather than simply hoping people would eventually notice it on their own? Invisible value only stays invisible until someone deliberately makes it visible.
Stories Outlive Spreadsheets
Financial statements and service lists rarely survive a business's history in any meaningful way, but a well-told story often does, sometimes literally, in the case of institutions destroyed by war or disaster and rebuilt from what people could still remember. Businesses rarely plan for lasting decades, but the ones that do eventually need exactly what most never bothered to capture: the human stories that explain not just what the business did, but why it mattered.
