Ange Dove (00:01)
Okay, welcome to the You're the Boss podcast. I have my guest with me today, Dr. Danny Brassell. Danny, welcome to the show.

Dr. Danny Brassell (00:11)
Thanks so much for having me, Ange. More importantly, thank you for spreading joy around the world—we need a lot more of that.

Ange Dove (00:17)
Thank you. Yes, we definitely do. So Danny, tell us a little bit about yourself. What do we need to know about you before we start?

Dr. Danny Brassell (00:26)
If I were to write an autobiography, it would probably be called Pivots, Ange, because I feel like I’ve already lived nine lives.

Thirty years ago, I was a journalist covering President Bush Sr. during the 1992 election. I loved my job—I met editors from every major daily. One offered me a city beat role for $16,500 a year. Meanwhile, a friend told me teachers in South Central Los Angeles were earning $25,000 a year.

So I became a teacher—for the noblest reason: the higher salary.

But I fell in love with teaching. I’ve taught all age levels—from preschoolers to rocket scientists. I actually taught English as a second language to engineering students at the University of Southern California.

In 2005, my wife and I attended a real estate seminar—it turned out to be a scam, and we lost everything financially.

I could give you a “woe is me” story, but I’m a positive person. I learned a lot:

  • My wife is my soulmate—she stood by me through everything.

  • Money isn’t everything—you can lose it instantly.

  • I stopped judging others—you never know their full story.

  • I became a Christian.

  • And finally, I didn’t want to file for bankruptcy, so my accountant told me I had to earn a certain amount.

So I started speaking on the side—and I hit that number exactly.
The next year, she raised the target—I hit it again.

By year three, I raised it myself. During one of the worst economic downturns, I built a highly lucrative speaking business, which led to coaching entrepreneurs, executives, and business owners.

I resisted coaching at first because I’m obsessive—I won’t let people fail. But now, it’s the most fulfilling work I’ve ever done.

So… take me down whichever path you like.

Ange Dove (02:53)
Wow, lots to unpack there. But I’m really interested in what you said about hitting those targets your accountant set. Was that mindset? How did that actually happen?

Dr. Danny Brassell (03:22)
I’m a father of three and a husband. When your back is against the wall, failure isn’t an option—like in Apollo 13.

I just had to do it. I hustled.

And honestly, that’s the lesson: sometimes we need pressure to realize our full potential.

Ange Dove (03:57)
Yeah, I relate to that. When I started my business, I had the mindset: this will not fail. I’m not going back to a job.

And my motto became: just do what it takes.

Dr. Danny Brassell (04:24)
Congratulations.

Ange Dove (04:26)
When you were teaching—what did that teach you?

Dr. Danny Brassell (04:43)
Everything about speaking.

I actually did it backwards—started with high schoolers, then younger and younger, until I was teaching little kids.

What I learned is: what works with older students doesn’t work with younger ones.

But what works with kindergartners works with everyone.

Kindergarten is like “New York, New York”—if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. They have about a seven-second attention span.

Ange Dove (05:16)
That’s interesting—tell me more.

Dr. Danny Brassell (05:24)
You have to be engaging constantly. They’re like puppies—“squirrel!”—you have to keep their attention.

That taught me everything about keeping an audience engaged.

Ange Dove (05:47)
That’s such a good point. So let’s talk about speaking—especially for business owners. What advice would you give someone starting out?

Dr. Danny Brassell (06:23)
Speaking is the fastest way to grow your business.

We teach people how to create a “well-crafted story”—a signature presentation you deliver again and again. Like a stump speech.

It becomes so natural, you don’t have to think about it.

And here’s the key: speaking is a skill. It can be learned.

Your first attempt won’t be great. Neither will your second. But it improves with reps.

Everything is about reps.

Ange Dove (08:06)
That reminds me of my first webinar—it went wrong. I got locked out!

But when I came back, everyone was still there. We laughed, and I realized: the worst already happened.

After that, the fear disappeared.

Dr. Danny Brassell (08:52)
Exactly.

Ange Dove (09:04)
And being on camera terrified me at first—my mind would go blank.

Dr. Danny Brassell (10:05)
That’s what makes you strong.

One mistake people make is bragging. Instead, talk about your failures.

People relate to failure—not perfection.

Ange Dove (10:50)
That reminds me of when my dad walked into a live session and sat eating breakfast behind me!

Dr. Danny Brassell (12:33)
That’s brilliant—that’s real. People remember real moments.

Authenticity beats perfection every time.

Ange Dove (13:20)
So should presentations be scripted?

Dr. Danny Brassell (13:34)
Yes—but you still need practice.

Even top performers get nervous. That just means you care.

The more you practice, the more natural it becomes.

Ange Dove (14:54)
I’ve seen that—people repeating the same presentation get better every time.

Dr. Danny Brassell (15:11)
Exactly. You only need one great presentation.

Like a hawker center vendor mastering one dish—you master your message.

Ange Dove (16:22)
So how do people build that presentation?

Dr. Danny Brassell (16:22)
We use the Five C’s:

  1. Clarity – Who is your audience? What problem do you solve?

  2. Connection – Build rapport.

  3. Content – Deliver value.

  4. Call to Action – One clear next step.

  5. Conversion – Measure results.

Too many choices confuse people. Keep it simple.

Ange Dove (19:41)
Right—numbers matter.

Dr. Danny Brassell (19:47)
Exactly. The only metric is: how many people take the next step?

Ange Dove (26:34)
That clarity piece really resonates—it’s the same in copywriting.

Dr. Danny Brassell (27:29)
And storytelling is key.

People don’t remember bullet points—they remember stories.

The extraordinary is in the ordinary.

Ange Dove (32:08)
That’s a perfect note to end on.

So where can people connect with you?

Dr. Danny Brassell (32:27)

Ange Dove (33:14)
Amazing. Thank you so much, Danny. This has been incredibly valuable.

Dr. Danny Brassell (33:34)
Thank you, Ange.
