What Every Business Owner Should Know About Public Speaking

Why Public Speaking Is the Fastest Way to Grow a Business

Most business owners treat speaking as an occasional favour, something you do when someone asks, not something you build on purpose. In a recent conversation on my podcast, You're the Boss, I spoke with a speaking coach who has spent decades teaching everyone from kindergartners to CEOs how to hold a room. What stood out wasn't a trick or a hack. It was how deliberately learnable the whole skill actually is, once you stop treating it as a talent you either have or don't.

Speaking Is a Skill, Not a Gift

There's a common myth that great speakers are simply born comfortable in front of people. They're not. Every confident speaker you've ever watched has a first attempt they'd rather forget. Like any skill, it improves through repetition, not inspiration. The people who get good at it are the people who accept that the first few reps will be rough, and do them anyway.

You Only Need One Great Presentation

You don't need a different talk for every room. You need one well-crafted story, refined until it's second nature, that you can deliver again and again with the same impact. Think of a hawker stall that's mastered a single dish over years, not a menu of fifty average ones. Depth beats breadth. Once your signature story is built, delivering it stops requiring effort and starts requiring only presence.

The Structure Behind Every Presentation That Works

A strong presentation isn't improvised, it's built on a repeatable structure: know exactly who you're speaking to and what problem you solve for them, build genuine connection before you deliver content, hand over real value, close with one clear next step, and then measure whether people actually take it. Dr. Danny Brassell, a speaking coach who has spent decades teaching everyone from kindergartners to CEOs how to hold a room, put it plainly when we spoke: skip the structure and even great content falls flat, but follow it, and even a simple message lands.

Failure Is More Relatable Than Perfection

One of the biggest mistakes new speakers make is trying to look flawless. Audiences don't bond with polish, they bond with honesty. The moment you're willing to talk about what went wrong, not just what went right, people lean in. A talk built entirely on wins feels like a highlight reel. A talk that includes the stumble feels like a conversation, and conversations are what people remember.

The Real Metric Isn't Applause

It's tempting to judge a talk by how it felt in the room. The number that actually matters is simpler: how many people took the next step afterward. Every presentation should end with one clear action, not five options. Confused audiences do nothing. Clear audiences move.

The Bottom Line

You don't need to become a different person to be a good speaker, you need one well-built story and the willingness to deliver it imperfectly until it becomes natural. If you've been avoiding speaking opportunities because you don't feel ready, understand that readiness isn't the prerequisite. Reps are. Start before you feel prepared, and let the preparation catch up.
