If there’s one thing I’ve learned in business (and life), it’s this: nothing ever goes exactly to plan.

And that’s not a bad thing.

In a recent episode of the You’re the Boss podcast, I sat down with Dr. Danny Brassell—speaker, coach, and self-confessed “man of many pivots.” His story is a powerful reminder that resilience in business isn’t about avoiding challenges… it’s about how you respond when everything falls apart.

Because at some point—it will.

When Life Forces You to Pivot

Danny’s journey started in journalism, covering the 1992 presidential election. From there, he pivoted into teaching, then entrepreneurship… and then, a major setback hit.

A real estate scam wiped him out financially.

Now, most people would stop there. But what stood out to me was this: he didn’t stay stuck in the story.

Not because it was easy.

But because failure wasn’t an option.

And I completely relate to that.

When I started my business, I had the exact same mindset: this has to work.

No backup plan. No safety net. Just a decision.

Why Public Speaking Changes Everything

We also talked a lot about public speaking—and I couldn’t agree more with Danny’s take:

Speaking is one of the fastest ways to grow your personal brand and your business.

But here’s the truth most people don’t talk about…

You won’t be good at it straight away.

Your first webinar might fail (mine did).

Your first video might feel awkward (mine definitely did).

But confidence doesn’t come before action—it comes because of it.

Danny’s advice is simple: build one strong, repeatable presentation. Refine it. Practice it. Own it.

That’s how you grow.

Stop Trying to Be Perfect

This was probably my favourite part of the conversation.

Danny said: stop talking about your successes all the time.

Talk about your failures.

Because that’s what people actually connect with.

And it’s so true.

People don’t relate to perfection—they relate to real moments. The messy ones. The unexpected ones. The times things go wrong (like my dad casually walking into a live session mid-training!).

That’s what makes you human. And that’s what builds trust.
