There’s something nobody tells you about entrepreneurship: sometimes it finds you before you ever planned for it.
In a recent episode of the You’re the Boss Podcast, I sat down with Kon Apostolopoulos, CEO of Fresh Biz Solutions, to talk about leadership, resilience, and the unexpected road that led him from corporate executive to entrepreneur. His story is one I think many business owners — especially those navigating career transitions — will deeply relate to.
Kon’s career spans more than 30 years across military instruction, corporate leadership, executive coaching, and consulting. But what stood out most in our conversation wasn’t just his impressive experience — it was his honesty about the realities of building a business.
Entrepreneurship Often Begins with Uncertainty
Like many entrepreneurs, Kon didn’t originally set out to build a business.
After years in corporate leadership roles, the 2008 recession changed everything. Despite his qualifications and experience, he encountered something many professionals quietly face: ageism in the hiring market.
Companies were happy to pay him as a consultant or advisor, but hesitant to hire him internally.
So he made a decision that would completely reshape his future.
Instead of waiting for opportunity, he created it.
That part of the conversation really resonated with me because so many business owners begin not from certainty, but from necessity. Sometimes entrepreneurship is born from frustration, redundancy, or simply realizing that your skills have greater value when you build something of your own.
The Reality Behind Business Success
We also talked about the myth of “overnight success.”
Kon was very clear: successful businesses are built through consistency, patience, and relationship-building over time. There’s no magic shortcut.
One thing he said that stayed with me was that entrepreneurship feels like “running full speed toward a cliff that’s three months away.” Honestly, I think most entrepreneurs understand that feeling all too well.
There are moments when business ownership feels exciting and empowering — and moments when it feels uncertain and overwhelming. The challenge is learning how to keep moving forward anyway.
That’s where leadership becomes essential.
Leadership Is About Adaptability
Throughout his career, Kon has focused heavily on leadership development and team performance. One of the biggest lessons from our conversation was that great leaders never stop learning.
Business changes. Markets shift. Teams evolve. And the leaders who succeed are the ones willing to adapt instead of resisting change.
This is especially important in today’s business environment, where many entrepreneurs are still rebuilding confidence and stability after the disruptions of recent years.
Adaptability isn’t weakness. It’s survival.
Relationships Still Matter Most
Another major takeaway from our conversation was the importance of relationships.
Networking often gets reduced to business cards and LinkedIn connections, but Kon spoke about relationships as genuine human connection. Many of the opportunities that shaped his business came from maintaining trust, staying visible, and continuing to provide value over time.
In business, people remember how you made them feel long before they remember your sales pitch.
Final Thoughts
Kon Apostolopoulos’s journey is a reminder that entrepreneurship is rarely linear. It requires resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to keep learning even when things feel uncertain.
Whether you’re transitioning out of corporate life, growing a business, or trying to rediscover momentum, there’s real value in understanding that success is built step by step — not overnight.
And perhaps most importantly: leadership starts with learning how to navigate uncertainty without losing sight of your vision.
