You Cannot Win Alone: What Mark Bruce and Dwayne Gibbs Taught Me About the Power of the Huddle
Let me ask you something uncomfortable.
When did you last have someone in your corner who was genuinely invested in your success — not just cheering you on from the sidelines, but actually in the room with you, asking the hard questions and holding you accountable to the answers?
If you are running your business alone, chances are that person does not exist. And that gap — between what you are capable of and what you are actually producing — might be the most expensive thing in your life right now.
That is the conversation I had with Mark Bruce and Dwayne Gibbs, co-founders of Huddle for Success, on a recent episode of the You're the Boss podcast. And it is one of those conversations that quietly rearranges things.
Two People. Decades of Experience. One Very Clear Mission.
Mark and Dwayne met at a convention in South Texas and discovered they were from the same hometown in Maryland. That was twelve years ago. What started as a conversation over shared love of crabs and the Baltimore Ravens eventually became a business partnership built on a single belief — that driven professionals who feel stuck do not need a new idea. They need a reset.
Dwayne spent thirty years travelling forty-five weekends a year, educating people on investing and real estate. He was not burned out on the work. He was burned out on doing it in service of everyone else's brand. He wanted to build something of his own.
Mark grew up with a coach — literally. His father was a high school basketball, soccer, and baseball coach who was demanding, consistent, and right about almost everything. Mark credits that foundation for everything he has built since.
Together they created Huddle for Success — and the name tells you everything you need to know. The huddle is where you regroup. Where you assess what is working and what is not. Where you go at halftime, before you go back out to play the second half.
The Problem With Going It Alone
One of the things Dwayne said in our conversation has stayed with me.
"Every time I had to reinvent myself, I was the only person in the room. And it made it really hard when you're the only person in the room trying to create a different outcome."
I know that feeling. I think most Gen X professionals know that feeling.
You set a goal and nobody knows about it but you. You do not hit it and nobody holds you to account. You tell yourself tomorrow. And tomorrow, as we all know, has a way of never quite arriving.
The world's best individual athletes — golfers, tennis players — all compete alone. And yet every single one of them has a team. A nutrition coach. A strength coach. A mindset coach. None of them do it without support.
Why do we expect business owners to be any different?
What a Paradigm Actually Is — And Why It Matters
Mark introduced a concept in our conversation that I think is one of the most practically useful ideas in personal development — and one of the most misunderstood.
A paradigm is not a buzzword. It is the collection of habits, beliefs, and automatic responses living in your subconscious mind — many of them installed there by your parents, your environment, and experiences you had so long ago you do not even remember them.
Your paradigm drives your actions. Your actions produce your results. So if you want different results, you have to go upstream. You have to change the paradigm.
The good news — and this is what Mark is clear about — is that you can. You can choose what thoughts you feed into your subconscious. You can, over time, rewire the beliefs that are quietly running your behaviour in the background.
The harder truth is that it is very difficult to see your own paradigm clearly. Mark described trying to write his own LinkedIn headline with a group of five other people. He fixed all five of theirs immediately. He could not do his own. One of them turned around and fixed it in thirty seconds.
"You can't read the label from inside the bottle."
That is not a Huddle for Success line. That is mine. But it is exactly what Mark was describing.
The Most Common Thing Holding People Back
I asked Mark and Dwayne what they see most often when a new client comes to them.
The answer was immediate. Time.
Everyone wants more time. And the people they work with — typically professionals and entrepreneurs aged 40 to 65 — are not short on capability. They are short on clarity. They are busy, overcommitted, and doing a lot of things that are not actually moving them forward.
The reset Huddle for Success offers is not about starting over. It is about stopping long enough to ask: what is actually working, what is not, and what do I really want?
That last question is deceptively powerful. What do you really want? Not what you are doing. Not what you are good at. Not what makes sense on paper.
What do you actually want?
Mark and Dwayne have sat with enough people to know that the answer to that question is rarely what was expected. And once you know the answer, the path forward becomes a lot clearer.
The Bottom Line
Mark and Dwayne built Huddle for Success because they both know what it feels like to be the only person in the room. And they decided to become the team that other people need.
If you are a Gen X professional who is successful by most measures but quietly aware that something has plateaued — this conversation is worth your time.
