How Structure and Strategy Help Women Entrepreneurs Turn Chaos Into Clarity
There’s something incredibly powerful about women who turn life’s hardest moments into purpose-driven leadership.
That’s exactly what stood out to me during my conversation with Chanda Coston on the You're the Boss Podcast.
Chanda’s story is one of resilience, discipline, and reinvention. A U.S. Navy veteran turned business strategist, she now helps women — particularly women over 40 — move from overwhelm and scattered ideas into clarity, structure, and profitable execution.
And honestly, I think so many women entrepreneurs will see themselves somewhere in her journey.
One of the biggest things Chanda spoke about was how much her military experience shaped the way she approaches business today.
“The structure and discipline, the tenacity, the ‘get-er-done’ attitude — these qualities are ingrained in me from my military experience.”
That structure became the foundation of how she now supports her clients through strategic planning, systems, and execution.
Because here’s the reality: many business owners don’t actually lack ideas.
They lack structure.
They have vision, passion, and ambition — but without clear systems and planning, everything starts to feel reactive. You end up constantly putting out fires instead of intentionally building growth.
What made Chanda’s story even more impactful was hearing how she navigated major personal challenges after leaving the military, including rebuilding her life while raising three children following an abusive marriage.
Like many women, she was searching for stability, flexibility, and a way to create a better future for her family.
That path eventually led her into entrepreneurship.
Initially, Chanda explored government contracting after realizing the significant opportunities available there.
“There’s a lot of money in government contracting. I was good at my job, so why not do it for myself?”
That mindset shift — recognizing her skills had value beyond traditional employment — became the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey.
Over time, her consulting work evolved into something deeper: coaching and mentorship.
Through nonprofit work mentoring young adults, Chanda discovered how rewarding it was to help people not only understand concepts but actually implement them successfully in their lives and businesses.
And this is something I believe many business owners underestimate.
People don’t just need information anymore. They need guidance, accountability, and support in applying that knowledge effectively.
One of my favorite parts of our conversation was Chanda’s perspective on time management.
As entrepreneurs, we often convince ourselves we’ll “figure things out as we go,” but Chanda strongly challenged that mindset.
“If you’re planning in the moment, you’re late for sure.”
Her approach is incredibly intentional. She plans her calendar far in advance to ensure her business, nonprofit commitments, and personal priorities all align with her bigger vision.
And honestly, that level of planning is what creates freedom.
When you operate without structure, everything feels urgent. But when you create systems, routines, and proactive planning, you reduce stress and make better decisions.
Chanda’s journey is such a powerful reminder that success isn’t built through hustle alone.
It’s built through clarity, consistency, resilience, and strategic action.
For women entrepreneurs especially, creating structure around your goals isn’t restrictive — it’s what allows your vision to actually grow.
