From Struggles to Success: What Entrepreneurs Can Learn from Michael Elliott

There’s a narrative we often hear in business that successful entrepreneurs were somehow born with all the right advantages.

But the reality is, many business owners start from incredibly difficult circumstances and build success through resilience, determination, and a refusal to give up.

In a recent episode of the You’re the Boss Podcast, I sat down with entrepreneur Michael Elliott to talk about his journey from humble beginnings to building multiple seven-figure businesses.

His story is honest, raw, and full of lessons for anyone navigating the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.

Success Doesn’t Always Start with Opportunity

Michael grew up in a family where money was tight and hard work was simply part of survival. H

is parents worked tirelessly to support the family, and it wasn’t until his mother started her own business that things began to improve financially.

What struck me during our conversation was how much environment shapes mindset.

Michael described entrepreneurship almost as something that became part of his identity early on.

Watching his parents work relentlessly taught him resilience long before he ever launched a business of his own.

But success didn’t come quickly or easily.

Hardship Can Become Your Turning Point

Life threw Michael several major personal challenges in a very short period of time — family trauma, financial pressure, and becoming a young father while still in college.

He openly shared how these experiences pushed him into a dark period emotionally.

And honestly, I think many entrepreneurs can relate to that feeling.

There’s often a moment in business — and in life — where you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain about what comes next.

Michael described this as his “frozen heart moment,” a point where he realised something needed to change.

Instead of staying there, he used that moment as fuel.

That’s one of the biggest lessons from our conversation: adversity can either stop you or sharpen you.

Entrepreneurship Requires Courage Before Confidence

One thing I loved about Michael’s story is that he didn’t wait until everything was perfect before starting his business.

After gaining experience working at a PPC agency, he realised he had outgrown his role.

Encouraged by a friend who challenged him to stop playing small, Michael decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship — despite having a newborn baby and limited savings.

That kind of decision is terrifying.

But often, entrepreneurship begins before you feel fully ready.

Michael explained that there comes a point where you simply know it’s time to move. Not because the fear disappears, but because staying where you are becomes more uncomfortable than taking the risk.

Growth Comes with Responsibility

As Michael’s business grew, so did the pressure.

Hiring staff changed everything. Suddenly, success wasn’t just about providing for himself — it became about supporting a team, creating opportunities for others, and building a culture people genuinely wanted to be part of.

That’s something many business owners underestimate. Leadership isn’t only about strategy and sales. It’s about people.

One of the most powerful moments in our conversation was hearing Michael talk about team members who believed in his vision enough to take risks alongside him.

That trust isn’t built overnight. It comes from transparency, consistency, and leading with integrity.

Final Thoughts

Michael Elliott’s journey is a reminder that successful businesses are rarely built from comfort.

They’re built through resilience, difficult decisions, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when circumstances feel uncertain.

Entrepreneurship isn’t about having a perfect start. It’s about learning how to grow through challenges and continuing to take action anyway.

And perhaps most importantly, it’s about understanding that success becomes far more meaningful when you bring others along with you.
