From Immigrant Dreams to Entrepreneurial Success: Jermaine Ee’s Journey

There’s something powerful about stories that remind you success isn’t linear—it’s layered, messy, and deeply human.

In this episode of You’re the Boss, I sat down with Jermaine Ee, whose journey from an immigrant family background to building multiple ventures is a masterclass in resilience, adaptability, and perspective.

But what stood out most wasn’t just what he’s achieved—it’s how he thinks.

The Truth About the “Straight Line” to Success

Jermaine grew up watching his parents build a life from scratch after moving to the United States from Malaysia.

And like many immigrant stories, it wasn’t glamorous—it was uncertain, disciplined, and full of sacrifice.

What he took from that wasn’t a blueprint—it was a mindset.

Success, as he put it, isn’t a straight line. It’s a series of ups and downs that only make sense when you look back. And that’s something I think many of us forget when we’re in the middle of our own chaos.

Because when you’re in it, it rarely feels like progress.

Entrepreneurship Starts Earlier Than You Think

Long before the word “entrepreneur” became trendy, Jermaine was already one—selling mixtapes at school and getting into trouble for it.

And that says something important.

Entrepreneurship isn’t something you suddenly become.

It’s often something you’ve always been—just without the label.

Yet, as we discussed, traditional systems rarely nurture that instinct. In fact, they often suppress it. Which makes it even more important to recognise and trust it when it shows up.

When the Traditional Path Doesn’t Fit

After graduating, Jermaine found himself in a frustrating position—too qualified for some roles, not qualified enough for others.

It’s a space many people find themselves in, especially high-potential individuals who don’t fit neatly into boxes.

His insight here was simple but powerful: if you want the opportunity, you have to de-risk it for the person hiring you.

That means understanding what they need—and positioning yourself as the safest, clearest choice.

It’s not just about being good. It’s about being understood.

Chasing Success vs. Understanding It

Like many driven people, Jermaine initially believed that success would solve everything.

More money. More validation. More achievement.

But life has a way of interrupting those narratives.

Through personal experiences—particularly around family and loss—he came to realise that success without clarity and connection is incomplete.

And this is where the conversation shifted into something deeper.

We spoke about how easy it is to operate on autopilot. To chase things you’ve never actually questioned. To build a life that looks right—but doesn’t feel right.

Sound familiar?

Redefining What Actually Matters

One of the most powerful takeaways from our conversation was this:

Just because something is available to pursue doesn’t mean it’s meaningful to you.

Jermaine’s journey—from startups to politics to building his current venture—reflects a constant recalibration. A willingness to pause and ask, “Is this actually what I want?”

And that’s a question more people need to sit with.

Because success, when defined intentionally, looks very different.

If this conversation resonated with you, I highly recommend listening to the full episode where we go deeper into mindset, business decisions, and the realities behind building a meaningful life.
