Why the Problem Usually Isn't Effort, It's the Model
When results plateau, the instinct is almost always to push harder, longer hours, more hustle, more grinding through the same approach. In a recent conversation on my podcast, a very different diagnosis came up: the issue often isn't effort at all, it's the underlying model producing the results in the first place.
Your Paradigm Drives Your Results More Than Your Effort Does
Beneath conscious decision-making sits a layer of subconscious habits and beliefs, absorbed over years, that quietly shape behaviour without ever being examined. That subconscious layer doesn't judge whether a belief is good or bad, it simply accepts whatever's been fed into it as true and produces actions accordingly. Mark Bruce and Dwayne Gibbs, co-founders of a coaching business built around this exact concept, described the practical implication clearly when we spoke: change what you consciously feed your subconscious mind, and the paradigm driving your habitual actions shifts along with it. Working harder inside an unexamined paradigm rarely produces different results, changing the paradigm itself does.
Every Solo Sport Still Has a Team Behind It
Even athletes who compete entirely alone, golfers, tennis players, are surrounded by a team, a nutrition coach, a trainer, a mental performance coach. None of them are expected to manage every part of their performance solo. Business owners often assume the opposite, that self-employment means going it entirely alone, when in practice a similar support structure, mentors, accountability partners, a mastermind group, tends to produce far better results than isolated effort ever does. The most successful individual performers were never actually working alone, they simply made the team invisible to everyone watching.
Reset, Don't Reinvent
A common misconception is that getting unstuck requires inventing something entirely new, a novel strategy, an untested approach nobody's tried before. In practice, most people who feel stuck don't need a revolutionary new system, they need to return to fundamentals they've simply drifted away from over time. Measuring progress against a consistent baseline at regular intervals, then honestly identifying where things have quietly fallen out of alignment, tends to be far more useful than searching for a completely new playbook. Sometimes getting back on track is simply about returning to what already worked.
Ask What You Actually Want to Do
It's easy to assume the path you're on is the only one available, especially after investing years into a specific career or role. A surprisingly powerful question cuts through that assumption directly: what do you actually want to do, not what you're currently doing out of momentum or obligation. That question doesn't require abandoning your current situation immediately, it simply opens the door to building toward something different in parallel, one deliberate step at a time.
The New Model
Chasing more hustle inside a broken or outdated model rarely produces the breakthrough people are looking for. Real change tends to come from examining the paradigm driving your habits, building genuine support around yourself rather than working in isolation, and having the honesty to ask what you actually want, rather than simply pushing harder at what you've always done.
