Be Seen in the Room

Why Women Who Stay Silent Are Being Written Out of the Future

Here is something that should stop you in your tracks.

The algorithms deciding who gets hired, promoted, and recognised in 2030 are being written right now. The leadership tracks, the hiring models, the systems that will shape the next decade of work — they are already under construction.

And if women's voices are not in the room while that construction is happening, the future will be built around someone else's idea of what leadership looks like.

That is the conversation I had with Parul Sharma — global HR leader turned founder of Rewired by Parul — on a recent episode of the You're the Boss podcast. And it is one of the most important conversations I have had on this show.

2030 Is Not Coming. It Is Already Here.

Parul framed it in a way that I have not been able to stop thinking about.

"2030 is a room already being built today," she told me. "The question is — are you shaping the room, or are you waiting outside for permission to enter?"

No one googles leaders or companies anymore. The next generation types questions straight into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity. Your name, your story, your voice — if it is not in the systems being built right now, you are invisible to the future being constructed around you.

That is not a technology problem. That is a visibility problem. And for women, it is urgent.

The High-Functioning Silence Nobody Is Talking About

One of the most powerful concepts Parul introduced in our conversation was what she calls high-functioning silence.

This is the woman who looks brilliant on paper. Strong LinkedIn profile. Delivering results. Leading teams. But her own voice is absent from the conversations that actually shape direction.

She is doing the work. She is carrying the room. But the system codes her as absent — because she is not being seen or heard in the places that count.

"I have spoken to women at every level over 20 years," Parul told me. "I have not found a single one who says she walks into a room and knows she will own it."

Even after two decades in global boardrooms, Parul found herself editing her voice. Shrinking. Adapting to rules that were never designed with women in mind.

That is what pushed her to build Rewired.

The Real Problem Is the Pattern

Here is what struck me most about Parul's work — and why it resonates so deeply with what I do.

The biggest barrier for women is not ambition. It is not talent. It is not even opportunity.

It is the pattern.

Women are wired — by conditioning, by systems, by decades of reactive policies built by men for men — to follow a prescribed path. University. Job. Climb the ladder. Retire. And when that path is disrupted — by redundancy, by AI, by a changing world — the pattern has no answer.

Parul brings neuroscience into her work specifically to address this. Drawing on the theory of neuroplasticity — the idea that what you think, you become — she works with women to break the mental loops that keep their best ideas stuck in their heads and their voices out of the rooms that matter.

"If we do not change the way we think," she said, "we cannot be powerful or flourishing in the world which is about to come."

Technology Is Not the Enemy. Silence Is.

One of the most practical and important points Parul made was about AI — and it is one I want every woman reading this to hear.

AI is not something that is happening to you. It is something you can feed with your voice, your story, your expertise. The output of any AI system is only as good as what goes into it. If women are not contributing their perspectives, their language, their knowledge — the outputs will be biased towards the voices that are already in the room.

You do not need to become a developer. You do not need to understand code.

You need to show up. You need to speak. You need to be present.

Make AI your personal assistant, not your competition.

The Challenge Parul Left Us With

As we wrapped up, I asked Parul what one challenge she would leave for women heading into 2030.

Her answer was simple. Direct. And I think it is exactly what Gen X women need to hear right now.

"Stop waiting to be ready. Being ready is a myth. 2030 is already under construction. If you are silent, you are invisible to the future."

That is it.

Stop waiting. Stop editing. Stop shrinking to fit rooms that were never built for you.

Get in the room. Shape it. Own it.
